Gulbai Tekra
The Stimulus; Gulbai Tekra
It is a slum area adjacent to posh colonies; close to CG Road. Approximate population is 7000; most belong to the Bavri tribe (originally from Rajasthan) who work as domestic help and labourers.
Like any slum, it is dirty with narrow lanes.
Swayam Foundation’s initial work was in Gulbai Tekra. Its journey started there in 2011.
Gulbai Tekra is an important centre for making clay idols, particularly Ganpathi idols before Ganesh Chaturthi. At that time, the area comes alive with creativity. The residents – young and old, men and women – get busy making idols in an array of forms, colours and materials.
Ganesha idols in different stages of formation are everywhere: in small plastic tents, on the roadside, and inside houses. This is why the locality has another name too – Ganesha Gully.
Our Initial Work; Gulbai Tekra
Identified drop-out children and children who never attended school, and reported to Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) about them.
Imparted to such children basic education for eventually mainstreaming them in schools.
Set up a computer center and conducted workshops for candle making, embroidery, tailoring, etc.
